DETAIL PHOTOGRAPHY EXAM...
wHAT IS DETAIL PHOTOGRAPHY?
Detail photography is based all around one thing. It focuses on certain parts in an image and that bit that has been focused on is made bold and clear to show the detail upon it. Detail photography is very personal and unique as it shows others small details that they would have never experienced or viewed before. It makes photography successful as it presents different things in others ways but the orignal normal boring way.
examples of detail photography of my own
Jo Whaley
Jo Whaley was born in 1953, she was awarded a visual art fellowship from the National Endowment for the arts. Her attention was caught by neutral artistically. Jo Whaley personally quoted that "I aim to hold up a mirror to our time period, I wanted a quiet, distilled image where emotion was subtle". This clearly shows that she wants to make her images natural with a subtle amount of emotion. A lot of her work is based upon insects as it fascinates her and it inspires her, especially butterflies due to the fact that they represent a new start or a new life. They fascinate her due to the colours, structures and designs of them. She has many favourite images of her own however over time they begin to change due to the progress.
I like this picture because it is extremely detailed also the colors that have been used have been used well as they all blend well together. The detail is supreme as you can notice small features such as the fur on the butterfly. I think that Jo Whaley has used a fast shutter speed and a large depth of filed due to the fact that small features have been focused on and they have been put into focus. This image is also well exposed as the use of contrast has been used well.
|
I don't necessarily dislike this image as it is very dark and I don't like the use of colors, however on the other hand the detail is sharp and very well focused. The exposure has been set approximately as the image is neither under or over exposed. I think that the white balance was set on outdoors- shady as this image displays dark colors.

henry Troup
Henry Troup is also known as John Henry Troup,he was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania 1924. He died at the age of 88 of a long illness in 2012. From my research I have realised that he was a black and white photographer, using this technique was extretmely effective as it made most of his images bold and outstanding.Henry Troup has used camera position and a controlled depth of field to explore detail in close-up views of features in the landscape such as sand, water and the surface of rocks.
I like this image because of the use of contrast and lighting . This picture reminds me of the desert due to the detail in the sand. I am pleased with the detailed of the lines within the sand due to the fact that it draws my attention to this image as the lines stand out.
|
I dislike this image as there is not much relevance and detail to the image and it does not make me me feel or think of anything. I find this image very dull and unsatisfying even though Henry Troup is a black and white photographer he could have added more detail to the lines to make them more bold.

alberto ghizzi panizza
Alberto Ghizzi Panizza, born in Parma in 1975, has inherited his artistic bent from his granddad who was a naïve painter. Since his childhood Alberto has drawn and painted. He began to take a keen interest in photography in 1997 during a visit to the ruins of ancient Egypt. He has grown fond of technology, computers and he is a forerunner of digital photography. Since he firmly believed in the huge potential of this technology, he started using it constantly in 1998 with a 0.06MP camera. Alberto has carried out many different jobs in this field: personal services, weddings, advertisements, photographic pictures.
This is my favorite picture of Alberto Ghizzi Panizza's work because it is very sharp and detailed. The droplets are extremely bold and outstanding as they catch the viewers attention.
|
I dislike this image due to the fact that the color's used don't work well together also the droplet are not very clear and bold. They do not stand out and they are not eye catching. To improve this image he could use more vibrant or pastel color's also he could make the droplets a lot more sharp and in focus.

plan- shoot 1
For my first shoot I am going to capture an image of the grass with specs of rain on it therefore I will capture the detail of the water and then I will find a picture of google of a butterfly preferably a natural coloured butterfly as I will link it back to my photographer Jo Whaley as she uses butterflies in her work. My camera will have a fast shutterspeed therefore this will allow me to capture the raindroplets, also my camera will have the white balance set on ourdoors due to the fact that my shoot will take place in a field, I will set the depth of field on the highest as it can possibly go as this will allow me to capture everything and everything will be in focus. Once I have completed my shoot I wil minipulate my image on photoshop and place it together, I am going to put the butterflies near the grass and I am going to change the contrast and colours on them.
BEST
This is my best photo due to the fact that I have captured the detail of the rain drops also I like this image because even though the front pieces of grass are blurred it makes my image more effective because of the background. My camera was set on a fast shutterspeed because I did not want the grass to move or the rain to become discrete. I also like this image because it has allowedme to minipulate the image freely. I also like this image because not all of it is in focus only the middle bit is. My white blalance level was set correctly due to the fact that the image is a crisp green colour and is not yellow is discoloured, also the exposure level is correct becuause the image is neither too bright or too dark.
Worst
This is my worst image because it it is out of focus and the image is unclear. This image did not turn out well because I did not manage to capture any raindrops and I did not have the exposure level set correctly, also the white balance was set on the incorrect setting due to the fact that the image is slightly discoloured and yellow. The exposure level is too high as my image is over exposed as it is too bright.

plan - shoot 2
For my seocnd shoot I am going to bring in a dream catcher and I am going to place it in the sand therefore this will allow me to capture the texture of the sand. I am going to minipulate my image and change the contrast and brightnbess, also I am going to change the colour of my image and apply a black and white filter on it with a tint, once I have applied the tint I will change the colour of the tint to a brown, neutral colour as I am going to be re creating some of Jo Whaleys work. I am going to apply butterflies and different insects too my image , I will find the images of the internet. I am going to have my camera set on manual because this will allow me to change the settings of my camera. I am going to have my camera on a high depth of field because this will allow me to capture the detail and textures, I am going to set my exposure level correctly because I dont want my image to be under or over exposed.
best
This is my best image due to the fact that I have captured the texture of the sand, also I like how I have positioned the dream catcher. I had my camera set on manual this allowed me to change the camera settings, I had the camera set on a fast shutterspeed because the weather conditions were poor therefore the feathers were moving about. My image is perfectly exposed.
worst
I dislike this image as it has been taken from the wrong angle and I captured the image from too far away. I dont like the position of the dream catcher, also I did not capture much detail of the image and I didnt capture any textures from the sand. This image is weak because my leg got into the picture.

best
This is my best image due to the fact that I have captured the detail of the wood, also my whole image is in focus. I have used my scarf as a detailed fabric as I layed my pencil colours upon it. My image is correctly exposed due to the fact that it is not it is not too light or too dark.
worst
This is my worst because it is slightly unfocused, also I didnt manage to capture any detail of the pencil colours. There is no detail of the pencils however is some texture on the scarf but not any detail.
final image.
Using colors and fabric reminded me of my culture, therefore I got the idea of using my culture in my exam work because I realized how much it linked and that it would allow me to do a variety of things such as editing different backgrounds, capturing detail in symbolic items and use a variety of colors.
exam preparation
holi festival
Holi is a Hindi and Sikh spring festival celebration in India and Nepal. The festival represents victory of good over evil arrival of spring, end of winter, and for many a festive day to meet others, play and laugh, forget and forgive, and repair broken relationships. Holi has become popular with non-Hindus in many parts of South Asia, as well as people of other communities outside Asia. In recent years the festival has spread to parts of Europe and North America as a spring celebration of love, frolic, and colors. Holi is a spring color festival celebrated by Hindu's and Sikh's, It is celebrated around March each year.
It is also known as the "festival of colors" or the "festival of love". Celebrated all over India since ancient times, Holi's precise form and purpose display great variety. Originally, Holi was an agricultural festival celebrating the arrival of spring.
symbolic items used
In my work I have used many different symbolic items such as a Kanga which is a wooden comb used to brush your hair,a Kara is a iron bangle that a Sikh wears around their wrist, also I have used a Kirpan which is a dagger, I also used a a picture of a Sikh guru named 'Guru Nanak Dev Ji'. I have used a necklace containing a Khanda on it, also I have used a salai, A salai is a metal thin stick used to tuck in all of their hair into a turban so that no hair is revealed. Finally I used prayer beads.
exam session 1
In session two I aim to edit a variety of images. I am going to use some images that I have captured at home of some cultural clothing, also I am going to use some more images that I captured in my own time of some religious, symbolic items. To form one whole image I am going to layer the two images with the clothing as layer one for the background then I am going to import layer two of the symbolic items on top and then I will change the opacity levels therefore the clothing will come through behind it. In the second session of my exam I am also going to manipulate a image of a flower with droplets on top of it, also inside of the droplets there will be flowers, and for the background I am also going to be using a picture that I have captured of powder paints being thrown onto white paper to represent the festival of Holi.
exam session 2
For my exam I am going to be creating a variety of images on photo shop with images I have captured. I am going to try and re create Alberto Ghizzi Panizza's work, however I will also be combining Jo
Whaleys's work with my final piece too. For my final piece I am going to use images of flowers, droplets , and butterflies. I am going to be using the magnetic lasso tool to select certain aspects of the images and place them onto the flowers then I will select either a butterfly or a different flower to place within the droplet.

evaluation
I have picked detail for my exam question, and I have created a variety of images. My images were inspired by my culture and my religion, being inspired by this allowed me to use a variety of colors and a variety of many different objects. I have also been inspired by Jo Whaley and her use of butterflies and subtle neutral colors. This allowed me to manipulate my images. I have also used random stuff such as feathers therefore this allowed me to capture the detail of the droplets and the detailed contrast that layed on the feathers. My work has a symbolic meaning of my religion.
